‘The Widex Hearing Garden celebrating sound’ is the Hampton Court Palace Flower Show’s first garden to be designed around the importance of hearing.
The Hearing Garden includes some key features such as an interactive ‘Listening Wall’ where visitors will be able to listen to garden sounds. Its purpose is to help visitors understand their hearing ability and to celebrate the pleasure it brings them. The garden will also include a water feature and sound sculptures.
It has been designed by Selina Botham and has been jointly developed by PC Werth (Widex UK), who manufacture some of the world’s leading hearing technology, and the Association of Independent Hearing Healthcare Professionals (AIHHP), whose Chairman, Richard Moss is senior partner at the Oxford Hearing Centre.
Richard Moss commented;
“With 1 in 6 people in the UK now experiencing some form of hearing impairment, we are keen to raise awareness regarding the value of the sounds we all take so much for granted. We hope the garden design will inspire people to stop, listen and appreciate the value of their own hearing and the importance of hearing conservation.”
The Garden design represents a typical sub-urban courtyard garden and provides an al fresco retreat in which the rhythms of the garden can be enjoyed. The atmosphere of the garden is intended to be relaxing and happy.
Garden designer, Selina Botham, of ‘Designs for All Seasons’, says she was inspired by the fact that people don’t always appreciate the sounds around them:
“Being in a garden, immersed in a full sensory experience is one of the great pleasures of life,” she said.
“I hope my design will help people to appreciate and celebrate those every day sounds that are so important in our enjoyment of the world around us.”
“This garden explores sound and hearing’s important contribution to our natural environment and to our overall sense of well-being. Naturally, it also highlights the direct enjoyment people get from their hearing sense,” comments P C Werth Ltd marketing manager Tom Parker.
“Visitors will find out how it is possible to experience gardens on another sensory level by being attuned to the ‘sound-scape’ all around."
